In 1991, director and Kabuki actor Tamasaburo approached Amano about designing the stage set for a new production of the traditional Japanese play Nayotake. Since that first collaboration, Amano has designed the sets for Yokihi and both costumes and sets for Kaijin Besso, an acient Chinese tale of the god Neptune.
